Time to write some sort of conversion report in here....

R7-1 Conversion Diary

 

Monday 1/4/02 – Swing arm, Ohlins forks, R7/1 carbon body work all ordered from East Coast Superbikes.

 Thursday 4/4/02 – Frame and various brackets to BBS Edinburgh for powder coating in satin black.

Monday 8/4/02 – Engine to Dave Stephenson for blue printing and balancing.

 Friday 12/4/02 – Frame and brackets back from BBS, Engine tuning commenced. Start to reassemble frame.

 Friday 19/4/02 – All fasteners replaced by lightweight anodised alloy items, except major load bearing items and special fitments. These were replaced with Titanium items. New Steering Head bearings fitted.

 Wednesday 24/4/02 – Engine work completed and waiting for delivery of it. Should arrive Sun 5/5/02.

 Friday 26/4/02 – Checked up on delivery of Swing Arm/Forks/Body Work etc. Approx 14days for delivery.

Saturday 4/5/02 – Ohlins front forks fitted and front end assembled

 Monday 6/5/02 – Blue Printed engine fitted and filled with oil.

JHP Titanium Hi Level exhaust fitted and EXUP serviced

Radiator and cooling system fitted

Carbs and air box fitted and hoses routed

Engine run carried out

Engine work includes;

Head Gasket split and oil valve manufactured and fitted to improve oil flow to head

New Tri Angle valve seats cut

Ports cleaned up, not polished!

Pistons and rods all balanced

Castings all cleaned and casings matched

Cam timing altered, (figures undisclosed by tuner)

 Tuesday 7/5/02 – Engine run again and wiring harnesses tidied up

 Monday 13/5/02 – Engine run again and oil drained.

Castrol GTX and new filter fitted to engine and runs carried out again

Continue with wiring harness/hose routing tidy up

Continue replacing standard fasteners with lightweight alloy fasteners

Tuesday 14/5/02 - QB Carbon R7 body kit and Spondon swing arm arrived. Order missing R7 DB screen

Swing arm and headlamp brace to BBS for satin black powder coating.

Tuesday 21/5/02 - Modification of R1 headlight wiring harness carried out to fit R7 projector lights. 

Spondon swing arm, shock and rear wheel fitted.

New Regina Gold X ring chain and sprocket kit fitted

Black powder coated, R7 headlamp/fairing brace fitted.

Carbon R7 fairing fitted. Carbon single seat unit fitted. Carbon front and rear huggers fitted.

Wednesday 22/5/02 - Tank refitted and Ohlins steering damper refitted.

Final check of bike and short shake down run carried out.

R71 Road Tested ...... WOH! It's not too shabby!!!

Monday 26/5/02 - Re-registered bike with new number, R7 YSF

Saturday 06/7/02 - All body work removed and given to Gordon Alexander for R71 paintwork.

Carbon under tray ordered from QB Carbon, to tidy up rear end.

Friday 19/7/02 - QB Carbon under tray and number plate holder arrive. 

Modify existing unit and relocate rear lights.

Tuesday 03/9/02 - R71 paintwork finished.

Body work refitted. QB Carbon under tray fitted. Tank refitted.

DB R7 screen fitted (looks rubbish so order Std R7 screen)

Tuesday 10/9/02 - Fit Marchesini wheels, after having new rear spacers machined.

Fit Ohlins rear shock.

Fit rear, Talon Wave disk.

Replace various load bearing bolts with Titanium equivalents.

AND THAT'S IT FOLKS.... or at least it should have been!

After having ridden the bike for a full season, a few niggling faults became apparent. The front brake was developing lever lock during heavy/prolonged use. The engine was also very quick to get hot and usually ended up boiling off some coolant, so during the winter, the following was also done to the bike.

Fit Docking Engineering, one off, race radiator. (to cure over heating problem)

Fit Brembo Radial front brake master cylinder. (to cure hydro locking brakes)

Fit Harris GP clip-on bars. (originals not long enough for Brembo M/C)
